Cheverus (Rev. Jean-Louis) is born in Mayenne, France.
January 28, 1768
A former student of Fr. Matignon, Jean-Louis Cheverus arrives in Boston on October 3, 1796 to assist Matignon by ministering to distant parishes and to the Native Americans in Maine. He serves as Bishop of Boston (1808*-23) and forges strong relationships with the town’s Protestant leaders. In Boston, he lives near today’s 222 Devonshire Street. Cheverus is transferred back to France in 1823 and later is named a cardinal. He dies in France on July 19, 1836.
